Race Profile: The Goblin Swarm

Recruitable Characters: Captain Wart, Chieftan Bighand

A staple in any great fantasy epic, goblins are mischievous creatures, small in size and often possess arcane talents. In Tynon, goblins, referred to as “The Swarm,” will be the first enemies players encounter on their quest to save the thirteen kingdoms from slavery and disaster under the dark wizards magic.

When in raiding parties far from the Goblins’ capital city of Greathovel, the Swarm wears armor and rags and is able to master weapons of all types. The Swarm operates best under a powerful leader, using their sheer numbers to overwhelm and defeat an enemy. However if their leader is killed in combat, the Swarm will break into a panic—chaos ensuing over the decision of who will become the next chieftain.

The first boss players will encounter in Tynon is Captain Wart, a goblin who grew up roaming the dirt paths of Greathovel. Raised in an extremely destitute family, Captain Wart quickly learned the skills necessary to survive goblin childhood, including pickpocketing, conning and scrapping. As he grew, he found himself unmatched amongst his peers in combat and consequently became a formidable master of the twin blade arts. With these skills, Captain Wart joined Chieftain Bighand, and their company became well-known and feared throughout the kingdom. Just as Captain Wart was reaching his prime, things took a turn for the worse when Chieftain Bighand encountered an emissary from the Dragon Queen…

Social games do a lot of things right, but I think we can all agree a stronger emphasis on compelling storylines would do wonders for the genre at large. The upcoming Tynon, a mutt of a game featuring RPG, sim, action, and social elements, plans to take that step forward, providing players with a truly story-driven experience.

A dark wizard has placed the king under a spell, and it’s up to you to rescue him and save the thirteen kingdoms he reigned over in the process. As tends to be the case with dark magic, there are plenty of side effects the player needs to account for, such as goblins roaming the land and serpent queens attacking the city. Wizards are huge jerks, basically.

Beyond just keeping the bad guys at bay, players must also assist in rebuilding the Imperial City. You can enlist the help of friends from Facebook and other social networks to speed along the process, not to mention gain valuable resources by visiting their towns. Despite the inclusion of social elements here, Tynon aims to be a mostly single-player experience.

In true RPG fashion, players will be in charge of customizing their team of heroes, equipping them with various weapons, pieces of armor, and more. This ability will be especially crucial, in light of the game’s wealth of unique quests for players to embark on. What works on the goblins may not be as effective on the serpent queen, you know.

I realize protecting and rebuilding a land is quite the tall order, but I’m sure we’ll all get by with a little help from our friends. Actually I just really wanted to get that song stuck in your head. If I tell you that Tynon will arrive this summer, playable via web browser, will you forgive me?

I hope.

uCool to launch social RPG Tynon this summer

Social game startup uCool is coming out of stealth today and describing its upcoming game, a social fantasy role-playing hybrid title called Tynon.

The Flash-based browser game is being made by members of the team behind Evony, a pioneering hardcore online game whose ads featuring busty women flooded the internet a couple of years ago. With Tynon, uCool hopes to create a unique blend of action, role-playing, social, strategy gameplay, and city building. The game will have a heavy emphasis on storytelling, and it is being created by a huge team of 170 people.

Boston-based uCool says that, “In Tynon, the King has come under the affliction of a dark wizard’s spell and it’s up to players to help the elite knight Rosaline and a band of heroes to rescue the king and save the thirteen kingdoms from the dark wizard’s magic. The lands continue to burn while wicked goblins roam free, serpent queens plague Verdant City, and the kingdom is threatened by disaster and slavery. Players must also help Rosaline rebuild the Imperial City to its former glory.”

The self-funded company’s executives include David Guo, chief product officer; Benjamin Gifford, business development director; Marco Mereu, legal counsel; and Tony Cerrato, marketing officer. All of them helped build and launch Evony. The CEO position hasn’t been filled yet.

“We wanted to create a separate independent studio and focus on a very complex, hybrid style of game that is very different from other hardcore titles out there,” said Gifford in an interview with GamesBeat. Guo added, “It is like there are three real games all working together as one game.”

Guo said the game would be very social. Players can enlist help from Facebook friends or friends on other social networks. Players can upgrade and customize their cities and gain resources by visiting neighboring towns. It will have hundreds of quests for players to earn more resources, gold, and gems. The game will be available on the web and on Facebook this summer. One key feature is that the game will be playable within 30 seconds of launch.

The game will have a single-player adventure story where you travel the realm, acquire unique heroes, and battle a variety of foes. You can create your own custom empire. The battle scenes will be animated, and players can upgrade their weapons, armor, and other features. Tynon will have 13 levels at the outset, and players can level up their characters to 100 levels. The game will also have daily or weekly competitions.

The company was founded in 2011 and competes with other hardcore social game companies such as Kabam and Kixeye. To a lesser extent, it competes with Zynga. uCool hopes to offer a faster game experience. The company is privately funded.

Tynon Covered by Cinema Blend

uCool, Inc. has pulled back the curtain on its latest fantasy RPG, Tynon, set to hit web browsers and Facebook sometime this summer. Promising a unique blend of RPG and city-building elements, uCool is touting Tynon as the “first truly story-driven social web game.”

Along with the announcement that Tynon would be playable in the next couple of months, uCool released a teaser video for the upcoming game, said to blend action and role-playing gameplay with social and strategy elements. The teaser trailer, unfortunately, doesn’t give us a very good idea of what Tynon will offer outside of some pretty graphics and what looks to be a turn-based combat system where soldier placement is key. The build-a-city elements don’t even make an appearance.

I suppose that’s why they call it a “teaser” trailer. Still, Facebook games seem to be getting better and better these days and Tynon looks like one of the most robust offerings to date. Announced features include a single player campaign, the ability to rebuild the Imperial City, PvP combat and the chance to visit and strengthen your friends’ cities.

You can visit the Tynon website but, like the teaser trailer, you’re not going to get a whole lot more information just yet. A date of July 4 is posted on the site, but no word on if that will be the official release date for the game or just a date when the website will launch more details. The anticipation is killing me.

Tynon Preview

Tynon is a hybrid browser game that combines elements of so called city-building, role-playing, action, strategy and social, each of which independently can be seen in games of different genre. However, all of them together are not commonly seen in one single title. And the unusual One is coming now titled Tynon, a free flash-based fantasy web game.

Tynon is hybrid; that’s obvious. How are the aforementioned elements blended together; that’s a question. Described as the “first truly story-driven social web game”, storytelling plays an important role that threads all pieces together perhaps.

In Tynon, players step into the role of knights who must help an elite knight Rosaline rescue the enchanted King by a dark wizard and save the thirteen kingdoms from the dark magic. There is a fantasy story to usher players into the journey of adventure through 100 levels, when they travel the realm, battle against monsters, collect and upgrade heroes and farm resources and loots and so on. Besides adventure, each player needs to build, upgrade and customize his/own cities with earned gold, gems and resources from quests. And socialization is closely connected to the city-building in that players get resources by visiting friends’.

Action is another striking portion in the game, which is registered in different modes of single-player campaign and PvP combat. To combat, players can build up strategic hero formation to beat down opponents. As shown in the teaser trailer, combat seems turn-based with several heroes in each side dealing damage on opponents in a turn. And heroes differ from one another in attribute, tribe, weapon, role and special attack. For instance, Hero Zodcul belongs to the tribe of Human, wield sword and board, act as heavy melee and possess the special sweeping slash attack; while hero Earror Starseeker is an Elf, a spellcaster who uses magic wand and deals damage by the specialty of fire strike. Predictably, strategy lies at the core of combat.

Tynon is developed by uCool, a Boston-based emerging social game developer with members behind Evony, and will be launched this summer on both web browsers and Facebook. If you happen to like the hybrid elements and be interested in checking how they are blended into a whole piece, you certainly want to keep eyes peeled for its beta and release in the next couple of months. (And July 4, 2012 is displayed without explanation at the official site.)
